Wallace “Wally” Elmer Hunt

October 10, 1929 ~ December 10, 2015

Wallace Elmer Hunt, 86, passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2015 near his North Ogden home, surrounded by loving family. Wally was born on October 10, 1929 in Sterling, Idaho to Vernon Elmer and Vera Emeline (Jones) Hunt. He was raised in Sterling and later Corinne, Utah, graduating from Box Elder High School with the Class of 1948.

Wally served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Southern States Mission, teaching mostly in Georgia and Alabama. Throughout his life he loved serving in the Church in various callings including Sunday School Teacher, Elders Quorum President, Ward Clerk, and High Priest Group Leader.

Upon returning from his mission Wally began courting his sweetheart, JoAnn Thompson, and they were married on June 3, 1953 in the Logan LDS Temple. They celebrated their 62nd Anniversary this year.

Wally began working at a planing mill for a time and delivered milk and ice cream all along the Wasatch Front.  He served as a fire fighter for Ogden City for 25 years where he retired at the rank of Captain.

Wally and JoAnn ran Wally’s Greenhouse in North Ogden together after his retirement and he later worked both as a custodian for the LDS Church and a crossing guard for the City of North Ogden. Many of the school kids fondly knew him as ‘Mr. Wally’ and would walk farther to cross where he was serving.

An accomplished artist, Wally enjoyed oil painting, wood carving, fly tying, hunting, fishing, and gardening.   He will be remembered for loving his family, his friendly nature, and for his storytelling.  He never knew a stranger.

Wally is survived by his wife, JoAnn; children, Alan (Janice) Hunt, Pleasant View; Shellie Beckstrom, Ogden; Peggy (Dan) McColloch, West Haven; Curtis (Cindy) Hunt, Willard; Nancy Hunt, Ogden;  Lisa (Ward) Minson, Austin, TX; and Ron (Debi) Hunt, Driggs, ID; 34 grandchildren and 63.7 great-grandchildren, as well as by his brother, David Wayne (Bonnie) Hunt, Brigham City; and in-laws, Bruce (Sue) Thompson, Tulsa, OK; brother-in-law, Jay D. Rigby; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Stacie; and by his sisters, Cleone Kirk and Marilyn Rigby.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the North Ogden 2nd Ward Chapel, 770 East 2100 North.  Friends may visit with family on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden Mortuary, 2140 N.
