Wallace Kenley Nalder
LAYTON - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and "coach" Wallace Kenley Nalder died peacefully June 30, 2010 at the age of 83 with his dear wife by his side. He was born February 24, 1927 in Layton, Utah to Hacel William Nalder and Catherine Garden Kenley and was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings and most of his friends.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities. He married his high school sweetheart, Doris Mitchell, on February 20, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple. Wally was the "All American Boy." He was an all-state lineman at Davis High School in 1943 and was team captain for the Darts in 1944 when he was named high school lineman of the year. After spending two years in the army during World War II, he played football for the University of Utah earning all-conference honors all three years and receiving All-American honorable mention. He turned down an opportunity to try out for the Chicago Bears in 1950. Upon graduation from the U of U, Wally started coaching high school football and basketball in Star Valley Wyoming and was later named head football coach at Eastern Arizona Junior College. In 1955 he was hired as an assistant football coach at BYU and the following year he took the position of head football coach at what was then Weber College enjoying great success before his retirement from coaching in 1964. Wally loved his players and they loved him. While teaching at Weber State he attended the University of Utah and earned his Doctorate in Education. He became the head of the physical education department at Weber State College in 1971 and retired in 1989. Wally and Doris were service missionaries for the LDS Church from 1995-1998. He loved that service, his family, and fishing and golfing with his friends. Wally enjoyed traveling to many lands and celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary and Doris''s 80th birthday with all his children and their spouses in Hawaii in 2006. He was a Great American.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years and his eight children: Karla (Neil) Thornley, Buffalo, TX; Kathy (Dick) Mouritsen, Grantsville, UT; Kenley (Karen) Nalder, Riverton, UT; Judy (Les) Prall, Layton, UT; Jacquie (Carl) LaCasce, Park City, UT; Mary Anne (Shane) Green, Jackson, OH; Nancy (Stan) Seely, Centerville, UT; Kaylyn (Scott) Beck, St. Petersburg, FL. along with 32 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren with many more to come.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 10, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road. Friends may visit family on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 No. Fairfield Road.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Avalon Care Center and Bristol Hospice, along with many loving neighbors especially Floyd and Neone Stenquist and Tammy and Mark Marchant for their loving care.
