Wayne Hughes

Wayne Lonnie Hughes, Sr., 66, passed away on April 20, 2016 with his daughter, Stephanie Mitchell, his stepson Mike Hampton and Wayne’s wife, Pat Hampton-Hughes at his side at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah.    Wayne had been critically ill for 13 months and suffered from multiple illnesses and had been hospitalized in 5 different hospitals for the last 6 months of his life.  He was a very resilient and strong person who went through many rough spots and he was very courageous and a valiant warrior to the end of his life.

Wayne Lonnie (McNabb) Hughes, Sr. was born in San Jose, California on September, 25, 1949 to his biological parents, Floyd Lynn McNabb. Sr. and Eleanor “Ellen” Davidson and would later be adopted by his biological sister, Mary Lou (McNabb) Hughes and her husband, Alan Hughes, after his biological mother died when he was just eight years old.

Wayne married Patricia Lynn (Sandman) Hampton on September 23, 1989 in Layton, Utah.  Wayne and Pat made their first home in Layton, Utah from 1989 until 1999 and then moved to Syracuse, Utah where they lived for 17 years. Wayne and Pat were married for 27 years.

Wayne entered the United States Air Force on July 2, 1970 during the Vietnam War Era and was honorably discharged on April 11. 1974. He was stationed at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas.  While Wayne was in the United States Air Force he chauffeured Lieutenants, Captains, Colonels, Majors, Brigadier General and General of the Air Force around to their destinations.  He also was a Non Commissioned Office In Charge (NCOIC) while at Randolph Air Force Base.  Wayne was also awarded the National Defense Service Medal, National Defense Service Pin and ribbon for serving honorably during a designated time period of which a “national emergency” had been declared during a time of war.

Wayne had a rewarding civil service career spanning 31 years at Hill Air Force Base, Utah.  He retired from HAFB in 2009 and went on to work at Lifetime Products in Clearfield, Utah for 3 ½ years.  While there he was always willing to lend a hand and do things with a fork lift that most people could not do and if it was something that had to be done in a timely and professional manner the crew and bosses would call in the “Big Dog” to get it done! After retiring from HAFB he also worked at Sam’s Club in Layton, Utah for 2 years as a taste tester.

Wayne has lived in San Jose, California; Anchorage, Alaska; Everett, Malden and Brockton, Massachusetts; San Antonio, Texas; Washington Terrace, Utah; Ogden, Utah; North Ogden, Utah; Sunset, Utah; Roy, Utah;  South Ogden, Utah; Layton, Utah and Syracuse, Utah.

Wayne was baptized and confirmed into the Catholic Church on June 18, 2015 while in Ogden  Regional Medical Center in South Ogden, Utah.  Wayne and his wife are members of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.

Wayne enjoyed wood working, crafts, antique shopping, antique car collecting, vintage car shows, cooking, flower gardening and caring for his meticulous yard.  Each year he would present his wife, Pat, the first rose of the season off their peace rose bush he transplanted from their home in Layton, Utah to their home in Syracuse, Utah 17 years ago.  Wayne would also present his wife, Pat, the first lilacs of the season from their lilac tree, which are her favorite flower.

Wayne’s wife, Pat, owns a party service for children and Wayne would dress up as the King during prince and princess parties to coronate the birthday child, dress up as a swashbuckling pirate, dress up as Dumbledore from Harry Potter and be Santa’s helper along with his wife, (Mrs. Claus) at Syracuse City Sing-a-longs, the Ogden Rescue Mission and at the homes of people Wayne and his wife did not know so that a family in need would have Christmas.

Wayne was very caring, loving and devoted to his wife, children and grandchildren. Wayne is survived by his caring wife and best friend, Patricia Lynn Hampton-Hughes and children; Wayne Lonnie Hughes, Jr., Christopher Nathaniel Hughes, Paulette Gayle Wirth, Chelynne Marie Hughes, Stephanie Breanna Mitchell (Brian Mitchell) and Michael Lynn Hampton (Teri Hampton).  Wayne is survived by his grandchildren; Jordon and Jacob Hughes, Gaven, Garrett, and Robin Wirth, Ethen, ChyAnn and  McKinzee Mitchell and Aubrey and Cayden Hampton.  Wayne is also survived by his brothers, Alan McNabb; David McNabb and half brother, Jimmy Fezzolare and several nieces and nephews.
