Wayne N. Hungerford, Lt. Col. (Ret.)
OGDEN a" Wayne Nelson Hungerford, Lt. Col. (Ret.) 83, died Tuesday, November 3, 2009 at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.
He was born July 17, 1926 in Flint, Michigan, a son of Nelson L. and Freda Norwalk Hungerford.
He graduated from high school and junior college in Flint, Michigan before joining the U.S. Air Force. He served as a jet-fighter pilot for 25 years, flying in combat in Korea and Vietnam. While in Vietnam, he was a Squadron Commander with the 531st Tactical Fighter Squadron Ben Hoa Vietnam in 1967. He was awarded many medals, including two Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Purple Heart.
Wayne married Jean Yetter in 1949. She died in 1993. He then married Shirley S. Barnard in 1995.
An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served in ward callings and had been an ordinance worker in the Ogden LDS Temple.
Wayne received a degree in engineering while serving in the U.S. Air Force. Upon retirement, he worked 16 years in the Ballistic Missile Program at Hill Air Force Base.
He enjoyed volunteering as a tour guide at the Hill Aerospace Museum. He also enjoyed his membership in the F-86 Sabre Pilots Association, the Air Force Association and the Order of Daedalians (the National Fraternity of Military Pilots).
Wayne began his love of golf while caddying after school during the Depression. He also enjoyed camping and playing tennis.
Surviving are his wife, Shirley, of Ogden; his children, Kevin Hungerford, Layton; Laurel Dillon, Salt Lake City; Valerie (Mike) Cole, Layton; Tara (Matt) O''Donnell, Warner Robbins, GA; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; his stepchildren, Ricky (Kathy) Barnard, Roy; Jon (Diana) Barnard, Provo; Julie (Pete) Greenwald, Bakersfield, CA; Amy (Vaun) Kohler, Willard; 14 step-grandchildren and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two brothers and one sister, Dale F. and Gerald L. Hungerford and one sister, Nancy Lewis.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Joanne Windle.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Lindquist''s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
Friends may call at the mortuary on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.
Interment, Lindquist''s Memorial Park at Layton, 1867 North Fairfield Road.
