Wayne Edward Shoop

June 3, 1942 ~ January 26, 2015

Wayne Edward Shoop passed away on Monday morning, January 26, 2015. Maybe a little on the short side in height when compared to most, but he carried himself like a seven footer. True to his character and high integrity he kept himself humble by considering himself “average on his best day.” A firm handshake and direct eye contact were part of his routine. A trusted “right hand man” too many, he loved having a plan and sticking to the itinerary. Wayne was a man of his word, educated, and to the point when giving a recommendation.

Born in 1942, South Philly would never be the same. He claims fighting with his only older brother made him tough; his only sister has a few stories to tell. Attending high school at Eddystone, he played running back and was thankful for each block and any small hole to run through. He was quick enough to catch a rabbit with his hands while running barefoot thru an open sagebrush, cactus littered field. He claimed the judge sentenced him to a life in the Air Force, few to none know the true prompting. The “Wild Blue Yonder” consisted of tours at Selfridge, Lowry, Air Force Academy, and Hill, coupled with a few oversees obligations. “Chief” Shoop embraced the 388 TFW during the eighties and later impacted Raleigh, North Carolina as his career came to a close. Wayne served his country with honor and dignity.

He loved fast cars and good looking women, as can be seen with his wife Janice of more than 50 years last December. Most who knew him well understood his ability to cut a rug. A daredevil when it came to four wheeling or motorcycles, and yes, the ski patrol got to work overtime. His degrees were earned at The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. Wayne enjoyed hunting, but never acquired the patience to fish. He loved to knock the pitchers hat off while batting during any softball game, and would arm wrestle with most.

A reputable husband and father…Dad was hardworking, an outstanding provider, “Shooper” would make you laugh, tell you a story or share generous feelings about a football game. A man with a distinct whistle, a man I’m proud to call my father. A special thanks to a man for filling our hearts and minds with memories that will last a lifetime and beyond. When the wind blows, or leaves rustle, or perhaps when the morning frost turns to dew, some will feel his spirit among us.

His legacy carries on thru his other half, wife, and genuine supporter Janice, children Christopher (Wendy) Shoop of Cedar City; Renee Wright of Layton; and Beverly Jones of Layton; Sister Bonnie Thompson; Grandchildren Tess, Brooke, Sierra, Casey, Brittany, Brody; Great-grandchild Casen. Preceded in death by his parents and Brother Kenneth.

The family will meet with friends Saturday, January 31, 2015 from 6 to 8p.m. at the Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.
