Wayne Thurgood Smedley
Syracuse, Utah - Wayne Thurgood Smedley, 83, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at the home in which he was born and raised. He was born Feb 17, 1927 to Clarence Waite and Cinda Mae Thurgood Smedley. He was educated in Syracuse and graduated from Davis High School in 1945 leaving to serve his country in the US. Navy.
He met his sweetheart, Maxine Stevenson and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple on his 21st birthday. They moved to the farming community of Lincoln, Idaho shortly after they were married and farmed there until Aug of 1950. At that time, they returned to Syracuse to run the family farm. He farmed and worked at Hill Air Force Base until he joined his brother, Dale, managing an appliance store. Later, he became the office manager of Smedley Plumbing and Heating. He later joined in a partnership with John Flint and Don Rentmeister, buying the business from his brother. In 1976, he developed land in East Layton providing opportunities for the family to build homes. That same year he formed Wayne T. Smedley & Associates in Layton and was the owner/operator until he retired in 1988. He and Maxine then had the opportunity to serve a mission in the California Santa Rosa Mission, working with the mission president. It was the first time Maxine could tell Wayne that he "Wasn''t the boss anymore."
Wayne was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving faithfully throughout his life. He served as Ward and Stake clerk for many years, and was called to be the Bishop of the Syracuse 2nd ward. He continued his service after moving to Layton as a member of the Layton East Stake High Council where he enjoyed working with the Young Adults. He continued to serve in many callings in his later years especially that of a faithful home teacher.
After his beloved wife passed away in 2008, he returned to his childhood home in Syracuse and lived with his daughter Kathy, who was devoted to his care.
He is survived by his six children, Douglas (Beverly) Smedley, Kathy Smedley, Michael (Babe) Smedley, Tammy (Gary) Boam, Randy (Lynda) Smedley and David (Kari) Smedley. He is the grandfather of 26 and great grandfather of 32 with two more on the way. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, six siblings and grandson, Matthew Boam.
He will be remembered for his generosity, honesty, work ethic and kind manner towards all who cared for him in his later years.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Syracuse Bluff Stake Center, 2350 W. 1900 So. Friends may visit family on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 No. Fairfield Road and Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment, Syracuse City Cemetery.
The family wishes to thank Kathy Smedley, Aubrey Smedley, Blair Rigby and Doug Smedley for their tender loving care. Special thanks for exceptional service that was rendered by Dr. Mark Milligan, Jeanine Smith, Dr. Michael Gailey, George Hamblin at Professional Pharmacy and IHC Hospice.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Clarence and Cinda Mae Thurgood Smedley scholarship fund at Syracuse High School/Davis Foundation.
