Weldon Miles Shegrud, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family. Weldon lived a long and full life. He was born October 21, 1927 to Allen Hartman and Ruby Stevens Shegrud in Grand Rapids, Minnesota.
His early years were spent fishing, hunting and playing hockey in Taconite, Minn. He was the second of nine children and was raised in a loving home. He served honorably in the United States Marine Corps at the conclusion of WWII. He used the GI bill and his optimistic attitude to complete a Business Economics Degree from the University of Minnesota at Duluth. He also found time to play on the intercollegiate hockey team.
He met his sweet heart while stationed in San Francisco after the war. He and Ruth Keller were married on March 13, 1952, later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.
Weldon loved his family and put them first in his life. He was never one to sit on the sidelines; he coached his sons in hockey and baseball. His love of hockey, snow skiing and golf was passed on to all his kids and grandkids. He ran a hockey drop in at the BRC since the day it opened, playing until he was 76 years old.
Dad was a great example of honorable manhood; he was honest, hardworking, courteous. He had a warm smile and always brought humor into difficult situations. Dad was devoted to Mom and always let us know how much he appreciated and loved her.
Dad loved to serve his neighbors and he could always be found removing snow and lending a helping hand for those in need. Growing up in the depression years, he learned the value of a dollar. He had a successful working career and retired from Hill Air Force Base.
What a great Dad, we will miss you dearly. Thank you for preparing us for life.
