Major Wendell Everett Brumley known to everyone as “Bud” passed away on Sunday July 2, 2017 at 84 years old. He was born Aug. 2, 1932 in Roswell, NM the son of Wendell Harry Brumley and Myrtle Bell “Mimi” Miller. He graduated from Washington High School in Los Angeles, CA and enlisted in the Air Force in March 1951 at 18 years old. He served as an enlisted man for 4 years and then re-enlisted for pilot and officer training. He was deployed to Vietnam in 1966 where he flew the “Super Saber” North American F-100D fighter bomber and “The Bird Dog” (the military version of a Cessna 172) which was constructed out of Tin, didn’t have protective armor plating and only reached speeds of 65mph and 85mph while diving. He didn’t a carry a parachute because it didn’t go high enough to bail out and he sat on his flak jacket to protect himself from bullets coming through the bottom of the plane. He was awarded the senior pilot rating for flying 162 missions. He was credited with numerous targets destroyed and 152 KBA’s. He retired in 1972 as a Major with a great love for his country. He wrote, “ I truly love my country, my America. I love the America that I learned about in school as a young person. I love the historical things that people of this country have accomplished that have made this world a better place. I love all the symbols of my America, the Stars and Stripes, the American Eagle, the Statue of Liberty, and all of the many other symbols that stand for what this country and its people have done.”
He married his sweetheart Charlotte Marie Miller on May 1, 1957 in Inglewood, CA and had 3 children. He chose to retire in Mountain Green, UT after flying over the beautiful Morgan Valley several times. After retirement, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at Weber State College and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA. He was awarded “Outstanding Academic Achievement in the School of Social Sciences.” He then went to work in the Juvenile Court system from 1978-1998.
He was fully invested in helping the juveniles he worked with. He wrote, “Some of the work with the juveniles was heartbreaking, some was frustrating, some was very satisfying. I will never forget some of the kids, both the success cases and the failures. Many went onto prison and jail, but they would come back to see me when they got out. Others went on to successful lives. One became an Air Force Pilot, others became Police Officers, College graduates, Probation Officers and a County Sheriff. They would drop in to see me and sometimes bring their wife and kids with them. They brought a great deal of satisfaction.”
He is survived by his sweet wife Charlotte Miller Brumley and two sons Loran Brumley (Dr. Allison) and Larry Brumley, eight grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and his sister Helona May Brumley Fischer. He is preceded in death by his daughter Leeann Marie (Brumley) Tucker (Pat). Special thanks to his granddaughter Brooke Marie (Brumley) Schilleman and her husband Chad Schilleman for their time and care in everything.
