Wendell "J" Madsen
NORTH OGDEN a" Our loving father, grandfather, companion, and friend passed away peacefully at his home on Father''s Day, Sunday, June 19, 2011, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born October 23, 1937 in Salt Lake City, a son of Clint and Beth Madsen (deceased). He was raised in a large family of nine brothers and sisters in Salt Lake City and graduated from South High School. He proudly served with the U.S. Marine Corps for four years.
Wendell married Sherma DeYoung in 1957 in Salt Lake City, Utah. They raised three children in Washington Terrace, to whom he was very devoted to: Carrie Nelson, Salt Lake City; Dena (Doug) Decaria, Farmington; and Jeffery "J" (B.J.) Madsen, Roy. Wendell and Sherma both loved to square dance and people would stop and watch them whenever they danced. Following 23 years of marriage, he and Sherma divorced.
He later met his "Soul Mate", Jacki Kirby, whom he spent his last 27 years with. In this relationship, he gained four more children, Heidi, Randy, Brent and Kelly. The two of them enjoyed many trips to Wendover, with Keno being their favorite game. In the last few years, when traveling was no longer possible, playing games online (Pogo) became their favorite pastime.
Wendell worked for Smith''s Food King for 23 years, followed by Harmons Grocery and then Golden Beverage until his retirement.
He was an active member of the Washington Terrace Jaycees and served on the Terrace Beautification Committee. Wendell took great pride in his yard, which was always the nicest one on the block. Wendell was an avid fisherman and always looked forward to fishing the Provo River with his brothers and dad. They would say that he could catch fish in a toilet. He always looked forward to deer hunting season and camping out with family and friends. Wendell was also an avid collector, and enjoyed going to yard sales.
Wendell leaves behind Jacki, his daughters Carrie Nelson and Dena (Doug) Decaria, his son Jeffery (B.J.) Madsen, Kelly Kirby, Brent Kirby, Randy Kirby and Heidi (Corey) Tremelling. He also leaves behind 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and one brother.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and aides who cared for him through his extended illness.
