Wilford Zaugg

Wilford Zaugg was 102 ½ when he passed away May 9, 2017 surrounded by family, at Fairfield Village in Layton.

He was active in his church and community, and is the last of that great generation in the family.

Wilford was born in LaGrande, Oregon, the youngest son of 13 children. He farmed there with his father and brothers until the Depression took their farm and beautiful stone house and barns in 1935. The family moved to West Point where they worked together to raise their families.

After serving an LDS mission to the Eastern States, Wilford married Elva Richeson in 1940. They were married 72 years before she passed away in 2012. They raised 11 children, who learned the value of hard work: Karen (Roy) Barraclough, Orem; Lee (Ruth Ann), Texas; Eileen (Gerry) Beltgens, British Columbia; Ned (Emily), Clearfield; Barbara (Hunter) Stuart, Phoenix; Laraine (Jerry) Bouck, Las Vegas; Reed (Dianne), Lewiston; Lowell/Buzz (Nikki), West Point; Russ, Mountain Green; Doug (Brenda), West Point; Kelly (Michelle), Ogden.

Wilford and Elva served an LDS mission in the Dallas Temple, and returned to work in the Ogden temple for 18 years. Wilford performed marriages for several of his grandchildren.

In 2015 he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement award by West Point City.

He enjoyed hunting, tending his garden, acting in melodramas, and woodworking. He received the Boone and Crockett national award for the best deer antlers of 1959. That rack hung in the Museum of Natural History in New York for two years. He made hundreds of pens out of special wood that neighbors and family brought from all over the world.

Wilford has 52 grandchildren and 107 great grandchildren.

Until March 20, Wilford was cared for at home by his family. We thank the caring staff at Fairfield Village Assisted Living for giving him friendly care and the wonderful attention he enjoyed.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate his life with his immediate family Wednesday, May 17 at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 W. 5600 S. from 6 -8 p.m. and May 18 from 11- 12:30 p.m. prior to the funeral. Funeral services May 18 at 1 p.m. at the West Point LDS Stake Center, 550 N. 2300 W. West Point.
