LAYTON - William Floyd Gibbs, 79, returned to the loving arms of his mother and father suddenly on August 9, 2015.
He was born December 21, 1935 to Duggan Zundel Gibbs and Edith Afton Whitehead Gibbs, in Pocatello, Idaho, and he grew up enjoying the peaceful farmland of McCammon, Idaho. In 1956 he married Barbara Lee Olson and they began a journey that included graduating from Utah State University and working for Volvo Construction Equipment, which took them to Michigan, Texas, Ohio, Sweden and North Carolina before retiring in Layton.
Floyd loved designing and testing heavy equipment throughout his engineering career. He was a “fixer” and a builder with a gentle sense of humor and a kind, sensitive heart. He enjoyed simple things: pocketknives, green tomato preserves, Willys Jeeps, tractors, making fudge and peanut brittle, and quietly serving those around him. He was a valiant Latter-day Saint who served several missions and as a bishop and held many other leadership positions, but his favorite was being a steadfast home teacher.
His legacy includes his wife Barbara, children Janice (Dan) Horschel of Albuquerque, NM; Ken (Darsi) of Pocatello, ID; Gerald of Albuquerque, NM; Ron (Carol) of Greenwood Village, CO; Suzanne (Troy) Taylor of Layton; Sharon (Steve) Tillett of Portland, OR; 17 grandchildren; 10 great-children; and a sister, Carolyn (Keith) McMullin of Bountiful.
Funeral services will be held Friday, August 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the Valley View Stake Center, 1589 East Gentile. Friends may visit family Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist Layton Mortuary, 1867 N. Fairfield Road, and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church.
