William Russell Garrett, Ph.D.

William Russell Garrett, Ph.D. passed away on May 18, 2016, after a battle with brain cancer. Will was born on February 18, 1977, in Centralia, Washington, to Steven and Elizabeth Garrett. He graduated from Washington State University with degrees in Materials Science Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. After working several years for Powdermet, Inc. in Cleveland, Ohio, Will decided to move to Golden, Colorado, to pursue a Master’s degree and a Doctorate degrees in Materials Science at the Colorado School of Mines. While in Colorado, Will met Cindy Schultz and they married in 2011. Together they have twin daughters, Penelope and Violet. Will achieved his doctorate in 2012 and moved his family to Utah so he could begin a new career at Orbital ATK as a rocket scientist.
Will had many interests, hobbies, and talents. He loved shooting, hiking, camping, rock hounding, gardening, beer brewing, playing the guitar, working on home improvement projects, and just plain tinkering. He was creative and a great problem solver, qualities recognized by NASA who presented Will with the Silver Snoopy Award for his significant and innovative contributions to the SLS program at Orbital ATK. Will had a sharp mind, a kind heart, and above all, a great sense of humor. He is deeply missed.
Will is survived by his wife, Cindy Schultz Garrett, his daughters, Penelope and Violet Garrett, his parents, Steven and Elizabeth Russell Garrett, and his sister, Anne Garrett Langseth.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
