William (Bill) Joseph Meehan, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully from this world surrounded by his family on Wednesday, September 10, 2014.
He was born on December 24, 1929 in New Britain, Connecticut to Francis and Margaret (McCue) Meehan. He spent his youth in the New Britain area. In 1948 he joined the United States Marine Corps.
Bill met the love of his life, Patricia (Pat) Lorraine Eversole while stationed at the Clearfield Naval Supply Dept (Freeport Center). They were married July 17, 1951. They raised six children as they traveled throughout the country from station to station, including Camp LeJeune and Cherry Point, in NC; Yuma, AZ; and finally Camp Pendleton in CA. His service as a Mess Sergeant took him to Okinawa, Korea and Vietnam. Bill proudly served his country in the USMC from 1948-1968, retiring with numerous commendations.
After retiring he worked as a Chef at Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and retired as the Executive Chef at Holy Cross Hospital in Salt Lake City.
His hobbies included hunting, camping, and golfing. He taught his children to cherish those special times together in the outdoors. One of Bill’s greatest pleasures came from knowing his “foursome” was first on the tee at a local golf course in the morning.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Pat and their six children, Kathie Covington, Syracuse; William (Bill) Joseph Jr. (Cheryl), West Point; Debbie Bemel, Syracuse; Jan Donelan (Paul), Clinton; Joe (Shelley), Clinton and Mike (Becky), Syracuse. Their large and loving family also includes 28 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Leo Meehan, USMC (Sharon) of Salem, CT.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Alice, Mona and Patti, two brothers, Bob and John both of whom served with him in the USMC.
Our family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Kathie and Debbie for their loving daily care.
Pat and her family would also like to extend their gratitude to Community Nursing Services, with special recognition to Queenie Aydelott for her loving and compassionate care and support, also to CNA Quinton Leatham for the care given.
