William F. Muhs

September 25, 1942 ~ May 28, 2014

William F. Muhs, 71, passed away on May 28, 2014 at home surrounded by his loving family following a 29 month fight against cancer. Bill was born on September 25, 1942 to Harvey P., Sr. and Marguerite Jorgenson Muhs in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.  He was second generation on both paternal sides (German and Norwegian).  Bill was the youngest of four children all of whom served in the US Military.  Bill's parents moved to Arvada, Colorado in 1956, where he graduated from Arvada Senior High School in 1961.  After attending the University of Colorado for a short time, Bill served in the US Army Intelligence Service where he received the Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service in Europe under General Paul L. Freeman, Jr., Commander of the US Army Europe (USAREUR).

Following his military service, Bill returned to Colorado and married his first wife, Joan Mauck in 1965, with whom he had three daughters. They later divorced.  Bill received his B.S. Degree in International Business from the University of Colorado-Boulder in 1968 and his MBA in Finance from CU in 1971.  He then entered the doctoral program at Texas Tech University receiving his PH.D. in 1976.  He spent the next 20 years as a professor of finance at Washington State University and Montana State University.

In 1994, Bill left academe and started his successful Registered Investment Advisory firm, Montvest. Ill health required him to sell the business soon after his cancer diagnosis. From 2001-2005, Bill was the Public Policy Liaison for Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Montana and also served on the National Board of Directors. His dedication and tireless efforts were critical in the passing of over 15 laws to help combat underage drinking and drunk driving in Montana, earning him the MADD National Golden Achievement award in 2003.

He was an active athlete and loved baseball, hiking, hunting, and skiing.  For many years his great joy was Masters ski racing and heli-skiing around the globe along with hunting trips around the world, especially Africa. In addition, Bill was an avid fan and supporter of college sports. In 2007, he moved to Utah and the following year married Carol Tiemann.  They traveled extensively.

Bill is survived by his wife, Carol of Utah;  his daughters, Liz Muhs Stone of Montana,  and Marguerite (Jim) Slavik, of South Africa; grandson, Casey Stone; former son-in-law, Chris Stone of Montana; and sister, Peggy Crawford of Oklahoma.  He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and daughter, Anne Marie Muhs.

A celebration of life will be held privately on Saturday, June 14th. Those wishing to attend may contact the family. Services entrusted to Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary.
