William H. Slaughter
WASHINGTON TERRACE a" William Henry Slaughter, 77, passed away from liver failure on Tuesday, February 15, 2011, at Wasatch Care Center in Ogden.
He was born July 7, 1933, in Bakersfield, California, the fifth of six children born to William Norval and Vera Richards Slaughter. He attended schools in Bakersfield, California until the seventh grade when his mother moved the family to Clearfield, Utah, following the death of his father in 1944. He completed his education in the Davis County Schools.
He answered to four different names: William, Henry, Bill and Hank. He always said to call him anything but, "LATE FOR DINNER."
Bill was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints having served in several callings including Cub Scout Leader, Sunday School President, Counselor in the Washington Terrace 9th Ward Bishopric, Home Teacher, and several years in the Genealogy Name Extraction Program. He loved genealogy and family histories.
Following high school, he served with the Utah National Guard and U.S. Navy during the Korean conflict. Following his military service, he returned to Bakersfield for employment with the Southern Pacific Railroad (Engine 1297) which was later moved to Ogden and frequently visited. His job was seasonal, so upon being laid off in November 1953, he returned to Clearfield for a visit. While there, his sister, Wilma, arranged a date with Shirley Adams a" "THE REST IS HISTORY".
Bill and Shirley were married June 14, 1954, in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. He took his bride back to Bakersfield to continue working for the railroad. Three years later, they returned to Utah to begin his career with the Internal Revenue Service. He retired as a Database Administrator in 1988 after 31 years of service.
Following retirement, he and Shirley traveled around the country by car to enjoy the beauties of our land. They loved to travel, so in 1990 they started driving sales and rental cars for a local car dealership and continued to do so for 17 years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, and five wonderful children and spouses: Teresa Slaughter, South Ogden; JoAnne Calder, Harrisville; Paul (Mary) Slaughter, Hyrum; Mark Slaughter, Ogden; Bill (Tracy) Slaughter, Riverdale; 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are three sisters and one brother: Mary Ellen Bailey, Layton; Wilma (Tracy) Barnes, Layton; Frances (Cal) Stringham, Malibu, CA; and Richard (Donna) Slaughter, Rocklin, CA.
Preceding Bill in death were his parents, one sister Eileen, and one grandson Cody Calder.
