William O. “Joe” Smith
William O. “Joe” Smith, beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully on August 4, 2015 surrounded by his loved ones.
William was born January 22, 1927 to Joseph and Stella Nerlin Smith in Oakland, CA. He grew up in Montana with his mother and two brothers on his mother’s family homestead.
He served his country in WWII in the Navy, and went on to work at Hill Air Force Base as a civilian for the next 30 years.
He married Pauline L. Hansen on December 31, 1953. She was the love of his life, and together they raised a blended family.
He loved traveling anywhere, anytime he had the chance, especially to his Navy Ship reunions. He collected sports memorabilia, and loved visiting with his favorite players. He enjoyed his trips to Wendover, where he was often “lucky.” He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren.
William “Joe” had a heart of gold, and his passing leaves a huge hole in the lives of all that knew him. He is survived by his daughters: Debby Steed, Diane Squires, Elaine Durand, Carol Ann Vigil, Sharon Johnson and his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His family is grateful to the nursing staff at County Pines that cared for him, especially during his last days, and listened to his stories for the past ten years. Also, the nurses at Symbii Home Health Care and Hospice.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist’s Memorial Gardens of the Wasatch, 1718 Combe Road.
