William Shaw Underwood
LAYTON a" William Shaw Underwood departed from this life on Friday, May 15, 2009 due to complications resulting from several strokes. Born on October 15, 1934, the son of Louis and Lillian Underwood, Bill spent his formative years in Ogden, UT.
He graduated from Ogden High School and completed both bachelor and master''s degrees in accounting from Brigham Young University. After a brief assignment in the Army and with General Electric in Richland, WA, he joined IBM as a systems engineer. He moved several times within the company (Albuquerque, Los Angeles, San Jose, Tulsa and Dallas) and held many positions including instructor, senior systems engineer and consulting technical support specialist. He retired after 34 years, having completed many projects and helped IBM to expand its businesses.
Bill married the former Betty Carter in the Salt Lake LDS Temple; October 13, 1955 they reared five children.
He is survived by his wife Betty, sons, Dean (Cheryl) and Mark (Patty); daughters, Diane (Dard) Larson, Janice (James) Johnson and Lisa Laughlin; twenty grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren, also surviving is his sister, Helen (Reed) Hill. He is preceded in death by his parents and one grandson (Bradley Underwood) His family was an important part of his life and he loved to visit them and to travel to many other places around the world.
He served faithfully in a variety of assignments within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including two missions (Manila Philippines and London England) He was a member of several bishoprics and stake presidencies, keeping the records and managing the affairs of various wards and stakes. He served for many years as an ordinance worker in several temples and as a sealer in both the London England and Ogden Utah temples.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 22, at 11 a.m. at Lindquist''s Layton Mortuary, 1867 North Fairfield Rd. Friends and family may call Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Mortuary.
