William “Bill” Jewel West, formally of Roy, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2008 of causes incident to age. He left this mortal life the way he lived, with character, strength, and a great sense of humor.
He was born on December 27, 1910 in Cheatam County, Tennessee to George Henry and Martha Mosier West. He left home at an early age to serve in the armed forces, traveling to the Philippines which he talked about often. Finally being stationed at Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, where he was discharged and started making his new life.
Bill married Angelena “Lena” Dubbeld on June 1, 1932 in Salt Lake City. During their marriage they enjoyed living in Salt Lake City, Ashland City, Tennessee, Washington Terrace and finally settling in Roy in 1950, staying active with family and friends.
For many years he was in the trucking business driving for Buckingham Transportation, Barton Trucking, and Western Auto, retiring from Tooele Ordinance Depot assigned at Hill Air Force Base.
During his private time he enjoyed being active with the Hillside Senior Citizens where he served many years as their president. During the summer months after his garden was planted, Bill and Lena could head to Strawberry Reservoir to meet up with Lena’s siblings for some fun filled camping and wonderful fishing. Fall would fast approach, the garden would start producing and he would keep the family and friends supplied with fruits and vegetables. Dad could make anything grow. His yard and garden were his pride and joy and always one of the best in the city.
He is survived by his daughters, Barbara (Leon) Brown, Roy; Jewel (Gary deceased) Young, West Point; his son, William J. Jr. (Linda) West, Mountain Green; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife, Lena, daughter, Norma, four brothers, Crude, Millard, Jack and Cecil, four sisters, Lettie, Jesse, Nancy and Nell, one son-in-law, two great-grandsons and one great-great-grandson.
A special thanks to the friends at Manor Care South Ogden for the loving care provided Dad in his time of need and to the very special friends at Hospice for Utah for the loving and professional care they provided Dad. Too many to name, were the loving and caring people that helped our family, we want to thank them all from the bottom of our hearts. God made angels and they touched our lives, and may we never forget.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South.
Family and friends may call at the mortuary on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Wednesday 9:45 to 10:45 a.m.
