Willie Lee Floyd Moore
July 25, 1923 ~ March 15, 2019
Our dearly loved and respected patriarch, Willie Lee Floyd Moore, passed away peacefully the morning of Sunday March 10, 2019 at home in Fort Washington, Maryland with his daughter Carol Moore Scott and his son-in-law John Scott by his side.
Born to Lavada and Will Moore, Sr. on July 25, 1923 in Arcadia, Louisiana, Mr. Moore was one of seven brothers (five of whom are deceased, two of whom are living) and two sisters (both deceased.) He was the devoted husband of 65 years to Betty Stewart Moore, community leader and retired Civil Servant of Hill Air Force Base, until Mrs. Moore passed away November 19th, 2013. Mr. Moore was the father of Philip Moore (deceased) and is survived by his daughter Carol Moore Scott and his eight grandchildren: Kevin, Maria, Cara, Angelo, Brandon, Kourtney, Jourdon, and Keisha; as well as 10 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
Mr. Moore was affectionately known in the community simply as “Willie” and at had one of the oldest African-American owned businesses, enduring 75 years, in Utah. He was the proprietor and barber of Moore’s Barbershop in Ogden’s Historic 25th Street district. While he touched the lives of literally thousands of people through his impeccable work ethic as a barber, cutting hair six days a week until he retired at the age of 90, most in the community considered him to also be a personal friend.
Adored for his great storytelling, on any given day in his barbershop he’d regale customers with stories about his time as a Harlem Globetrotter or as a scout for the Utah Stars ABA basketball team. He was an avid sports enthusiast and in his earlier days, an accomplished bowler and golfer, winning many tournaments across the country.
A digital memorial on the Moore’s Barbershop Facebook page has emerged where hundreds of Willie’s friends have written about how he’s touched their lives in a personal and meaningful way. It is clear that Ogden lost a true friend and beloved man.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 29, 2019 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Parish, 210 Chapel Street, Layton; to be immediately followed by a luncheon. There will be a private family procession down Historic 25th Street, stopping at Moore’s Barbershop (196 25th Street), allowing Mr. Moore to symbolically say goodbye. Friends may visit with family on Thursday, March 28th from 7 to 8 p.m. at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in Willie Moore’s honor to the Southern Poverty Law Center (www.splcenter.org) whose mission aligns with everything in which Mr. Moore believed.
