Winnifred Ospital

May 7, 1936 ~ July 4, 2017

Winnifred Ospital, 81, Ogden, Utah, passed on July 4, 2017 due to injuries sustained from a fall.

Winnifred was born in Ogden, Utah on May 7, 1936. She grew up in Davis County and Idaho.  She graduated from Utah State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Family Life and a Master’s in Secondary Education. Winnifred’s education benefited thousands of Utah students – first as a teacher at Ben Lomond High School (17 years) and then as an Ogden City Schools Administrator and Director of Secondary/Vocational Education (10 years). Among her many accomplishments, Winnifred was named Utah Teacher of the Year by Family Life in 1975. She demonstrated her love of creating in textiles when she originated, designed and presented a show (featuring students) of 1776 clothing and fashions for the bi-centennial celebration.

While at Utah State in the mid-1950s, she met a tall handsome and talented engineering student, John Ospital. They married on September 14, 1957; introduced their sons, Chris and Todd, to the world in 1960 and 1962 respectively. She was preceded in death by Todd who passed away in an automobile accident during his early college years. In 1990, Chris married Judie Hunsaker, they are the parents of Andria (Andi) and Adam.

Winnifred also met Lou Shurtleff at Utah State.  They have been sorority sisters, dear friends and avid bridge players for 60+ years.

Winnifred added beauty to the world as she wove the fabric of her life: the amazing textiles, cooking for friends and family, traveling the world, celebrating the arts and the people she welcomed into her life whom she loved and cared for – especially her two sweet grandchildren (and their parents).

Winnifred was honorable, respectable, humorous, hard-working and fun-loving. She could also express strong opinions and demand excellence in herself and others!  Either way, she will always be deeply loved and sorely missed.
