Winona Christensen Farr
Winona Christensen Farr of Ogden, Utah, passed away on December 9, 2011 at Emeritus Estates Assisted Living. She was the wife of Boyd Holden Farr of Lafayette, California. Winona was born on September 18, 1923, in Neola, Utah, the daughter of Joseph Emanual and Elnora Green Christensen.
She grew up on the Uintah and Ouray Indian Reservation. In 1942, Winona enrolled in the University of Utah, majoring in drama, a lifelong interest. Nonie worked hard and supported herself through college, earning a Bachelor''s of Science Degree in Speech with High School Certificate. In her senior year, she met the love of her life, Boyd. Boyd told her that even though she was in love with someone else, she would marry him. Four years later, on 11 May 1946, they were sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple by President George Albert Smith. After the war, Boyd and Winona moved to the San Francisco Bay area, where they lived until his death in 2009.
In 1963, Winona earned a Master of Art Degree in Speech Pathology from San Francisco State College. Winona was an outstanding teacher. She created a special needs program for those who had trouble functioning academically, socially, and emotionally in a classroom. She integrated basics such as typing, meal preparations, running a car wash and a class bank. In this way, she taught the students basic living skills. Winona''s class was recognized through the county and state for its innovation and success at building productive citizens out of troubled youth.
During her golden years, Winona enjoyed traveling all over the world on cruises with Boyd. They also served together as ordinance workers in the Oakland LDS Temple. Her later years of life were spent serving and being with her family.
Winona is survived by her children, Kipley Atherton Farr; Valerie Mary Farr Bosworth; and Randal Boyd Farr; her sister, Verda; her brothers, Gale, Jay, and Neil; eight grandchildren, Michael, Rachel, Emma, Elizabeth, Gregory, Abram, Tessa, and Ethan; and ten great-grandchildren.
