Elaine A. Smith

July 17, 1921 - April 18, 2017

Elaine A. Smith passed away peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the age of 95, at Mountain Ridge in South Ogden.

Elaine was born and raised in Tooele, Utah, a daughter of Henry LeRoy Alsop (Roy) and Irene S. Alsop

Elaine graduated from Tooele High School in 1939. She left there to attend the University of Utah for 2 years. There she met and fell in love with her lifelong husband Vern M. Smith.

Shortly thereafter the two were married and moved to Brigham City in 1942 and started a family. Stephanie and Blen were born there. Elaine and Vern with kids in tow moved to Clearfield in the late 40’s and had two more boys, Roger and Gary.

With their move, the couple started Vern M. Smith Insurance Co. and worked together diligently building the business through the years successfully. They retired in the 80’s and passed ownership to Blen, who thrived at Blen Smith Insurance until he retired and sold the business.

Elaine touched all who met her and was treasured by many. She had a keen wit and her charm could bring a smile and a certain warmth.

She had golf group of ladies she was especially fond of. Elaine skied when she was younger and was a master at sewing, keeping kids and house spotless and, of course, managing the insurance business. Elaine’s constant activities that included lots of helping others was a key to her longevity.

She is preceded in death by her siblings, (Audrey, Maurice and Farrell), her husband (Vern), son (Blen) and a grandchild (Spencer).

Vern nicknamed Elaine “Shorty”. She expressed her wishes when she said “My name is ‘Shorty’ means I like to keep things short.” So in her memory there will be a viewing only.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter. Stephanie Broschinsky (Charles), Roger Smith and Gary Smith. Eight grandchildren and eleven great grandkids (with another on the way).

The family would like to give a large “Thank You” to the staff at Mountain Ridge Assisted Living and the hospice workers and nurses at Comfort Worx.

The viewing for Elaine will be held at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. on Friday, April 21, 2017 from 12:00 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. Graveside services will be at 2:00 at the Clearfield Cemetery, 1050 So. State Street.
