Glossary of Terms

Burial —To place human remains underground.

Cemetery — Burial grounds for human remains.

Columbarium — Arrangement of niches in a building or room for the display of urns containing cremated remains.

Companion Memorial — A memorial for two or more individuals.

Cremated Remains — The human remains after cremation.

Cremation Vault — Container for an urn when buried.

Cremorial — Space in an urn garden designated for the burial of cremated remains below ground.

Crypt — A space capable of holding a casket above ground.

Companion Lawn Crypt — Pre-constructed facility in the ground capable of holding two caskets in the same space.

Companion Mausoleum Crypt — A space in a mausoleum (building) capable of holding two caskets.

Endowment Care — A trust fund established to provide for the permanent upkeep and care of the cemetery buildings and grounds.

Entombment — The placement of human remains in a crypt.

Family Estate — Two spaces pre-crypted in a walled garden setting and including pillowstone.

Family Estates (Private Garden) — Several spaces pre-crypted in a gated, private, and walled garden setting. Includes granite bench and pillowstone or monument.

Family Estates (Semi-Private Garden) — Several spaces pre-crypted in a private, and walled garden setting. Includes granite bench and pillowstone or monument.

Grave — A space of land designated for the burial of human remains.

Interment — The disposition of human remains by burial.

Inurnment — Placement of cremated remains in an urn.

Liner — Non-protective container used to cover the casket for ground burial.

Mausoleum — A permanent building above ground or partially above ground for entombment of human remains.

Mausoleum Crypt—Space in a mausoleum (building) capable of holding a casket.

Memorial Headstone—A headstone, monument, marker, nameplate or inscription identifying the human remains or cremated remains (also called memorialization).

Niche—A space capable of holding cremated remains.

Mausoleum Niche—A space in a mausoleum capable of holding cremated remains above ground.

Opening and Closing—The preparation of the grave, space, crypt, or niche to receive the human remains or cremated remains and the sealing of the grave, space, crypt, or niche after interment.

Plot—Two or more adjoining graves.

Scattering—The disposal of cremated remains in a designated area.

Urn—A receptacle into which cremated remains are placed.

Vase—A receptacle for the placement of flowers on a grave, crypt, or niche.

Vault—Enclosed protective container used for the burial of a casket.
